Do you enjoy working with college-bound high-school students?

Do you support diversity and seek to improve NC State’s campus climate?

The Office of Enrollment Management and Services is hosting our second annualEmerging Scholars Academy this summer and we are looking for dedicated NC State graduate and undergraduate students to be a part in making this program a success, by serving as mentors. The program is a six-day residential summer program at NC State University where rising high school juniors will have the following opportunities:

  • experience university campus life
  • attend classes taught by university professors
  • discuss cultural identity and concerns for African American students
  • participate in college preparation activities

Preferred Experience:
The mentor position requires initiative, tact, diplomacy, and a strong commitment to service. Successful mentors demonstrate the ability to work well with youth, collaborate creatively and effectively with others, and demonstrate excellent organizational and communication skills, including the ability to listen carefully and speak persuasively.   Preference will be given to applicants with previous work or coursework with youth or education, work with diverse populations, demonstrated leadership, and/or a committed volunteer service.  Mentors will be paid a stipend of $750.

Applicants with supervisory experience have the option to apply for a mentor supervisor position.  The supervisor position provides leadership and serves as a resource for the mentors throughout the week of the program.  This position will also serve as a liaison between the full-time staff and mentors.  The mentor supervisor will live in the residence halls with the participants and mentors for the duration of the program.  The mentor supervisor will be paid a stipend of $1000.

Mentor Expectations:
Mentors will arrive for training the morning of Saturday, June 24, 2017.  Program participants arrive Sunday, June 25.  The program ends by early evening on Saturday, July 1.  Mentors are expected to fully engage with their assigned leadership roles throughout the entire program including:

  • chaperoning program participants
  • leading and coordinating programs
  • staying in the residence halls overnight

Those considered for either position will be asked to provide 3 references, and must pass both a criminal background check as well as a student conduct check, prior to final selection.

Research Participation Program for CDC, National Center for Environmental Health (NCEH) and the Division of Laboratory Sciences (DLS)


ORISE Fellowship Program – Centers for Disease Control and Prevention

The Research Participation Program for CDC, National Center for Environmental Health (NCEH) and the Division of Laboratory Sciences (DLS) provides opportunities for members of the academic community (i.e., postgraduates, students, and faculty) to participate in DLS programs, projects, and activities. The program is administered by the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE). The goal of the ORISE Fellowship program is to enhance the educational programs offered by academic institutions, strengthen the scientific and technical manpower base, transfer knowledge and technology to the academic community, and support a growing national commitment to science education.

College and university faculty, students, and post-graduates are provided opportunities for hands-on participation in research and development activities at federal laboratories. To be eligible for the program,

  1. Postgraduate participants must have received a college degree within five years of the date of appointment,
  2. Student participants must be enrolled in an accredited U.S. college or university, and
  3. Faculty participants must be a full-time faculty member at an accredited U.S. college or university.

These requirements help ensure that participants are still engaged in formal education and that the experience will enhance their personal education and skills. As a result of these appointments, technology is introduced (or reintroduced) into the universities and colleges and integrated into campus-based instruction and research programs. The ORISE program provides opportunities for participants to

  • Enhance their professional development in science, mathematics, and engineering areas
  • Become familiar with the research areas of the Division of Laboratory Sciences
  • Develop as scientists and engineers for future employment in fields related to the DLS mission.

University Tutorial Center’s spring 2017 Resources

This spring the University Tutorial Center (UTC) will provide free academic assistance to NC State students enrolled for credit in many high demand gateway courses.  The following assistance will be available:

  • Evening drop-in tutoring for CH 101 and CH 221 (NEW!) and pre-calculus and calculus math courses
  • Supplemental Instruction (SI) for Chemistry 101, 201, 221, 223 and PY 211
  • Writing and Speaking services for both undergraduate and graduate students for assistance at any stage of the writing process
  • two different tutoring by appointment programs* for most 100- and 200- level math, chemistry, and physics courses  (only option that requires new users to complete a one-time 30 minute orientation)

*Important information for the tutoring by appointment programs: 

Attending an orientation is the first step in the tutoring by appointment application process for students who have not attended one in a previous semester.  Students who are new to the UTC and interested in applying for a tutor by appointment should visit  https://tutorial.dasa.ncsu.edu/tutoring/fallspring-tutoring/ to view our orientation schedule.  Students do not need to pre-register for an orientation, although it is essential that they arrive on time to the large group meeting.  Students who arrive after the session has begun will be asked to attend a different session.  Orientation opportunities will begin on Wednesday, January 11th.

Students who have completed an orientation in a previous semester and want a tutor by appointment should submit an application online beginning Wednesday, January 11th.

 The priority deadline for tutoring by appointment applications is March 1st (before Spring Break) to encourage students to seek assistance early in the semester.  However, tutor applications will be accepted after this date as resources allow.

Drop-in tutoring, SI, and writing programs are available throughout the semester.
