Global Health Challenges Seminar: International Reproductive Health

The Impostor Syndrome – A Talk with Dr. Valerie Ashby

Dean Ashby has engaged in all aspects of the university educational experience and has received awards for excellence in teaching and research.  Her talk will focus on how students can overcome challenges, real or perceived, to achieve success in their academic and professional career!

What is the Impostor Syndrome?
  • Impostor Syndrome can be defined as a collection of feelings of inadequacy that persist even in face of information that indicates that the opposite is true
  • It is the feeling that you are not really a successful, competent, smart student. You are just really good at “faking it”
  • Common thoughts that characterize the syndrome in students are: “I feel like a fraud”
    “My professors are going to find out I don’t really belong here” and/or “Admissions made a mistake”
  • Impostor Syndrome is most often associated with highly achieving, successful people

IPUS 295: Globalizing North Carolina, Summer Session II

Transnational flows and global forces over the past 60 years have transformed the once rural North Carolina with its prosperous tobacco, textile, furniture, and emerging military industries. North Carolina is now home to 2nd largest banking center in the US and to two of the nation’s top ten fastest growing urban areas as well as the largest research park in the nation, and the largest military base in the world. This course examines the consequences, often unforeseen, of these globalizing forces on specific communities in North Carolina.

Summer Session 2, 2017 * M-F 9:50 – 11:20 (3 credits) *

IPUS 295 meets the IP and US Diversity GEP.  The course includes 1 to 2 fieldtrips outside of scheduled class times.
