February 25 deadline- Fall Semester (2016) Scholarship Opportunity (undergraduates) Duke University Marine Laboratory

The Duke University Marine Lab is pleased to offer scholarships for two non-Duke undergraduates covering tuition & fees, room & board, books, travel to Beaufort, and full support for participation in a Beaufort Signature travel course to Panama during a semester of study, Fall 2016 in Beaufort North Carolina. Undergraduate fellows will enroll in Duke courses taught in Beaufort, where there is emphasis on the biology and physiology of marine organisms, marine molecular biology, marine policy, and coastal socio-ecological issues. Announcement of awards will be made no later than 15 March 2016. Students on financial aid should consult with their financial aid advisor to determine how a scholarship would impact their financial aid package.

To be eligible, an applicant must

  • be enrolled as a sophomore, junior, or senior in college in Fall 2016
  • be a US citizen or hold a permanent resident visa

Other factors considered in the evaluation process include whether an applicant

  • identifies with a group that is racially/ethnically underrepresented in marine science
  • has demonstrated interest in marine science and its impact on society
  • anticipates pursuing a PhD in the marine sciences
  • submits a compelling personal statement and strong letters of recommendation

Summer Internship at Biogen

The Biogen Community Lab in Research Triangle Park (RTP) is seeking a summer intern. The intern’s main responsibility will be to assist with running the Community Lab summer sessions for high school students and professional development for teachers. During the summer, the intern will perform basic laboratory preparation and clean up, test hands on genetics and microbiology labs, assist with the organization of the summer sessions and the related paperwork, as well as provide teaching assistance. Applicants should have a strong background in the biological sciences including at least basic lab experience in genetics and microbiology. Archives and Data Visualization at the NCSU Libraries: Enhancing Research on Women in STEM

Two NCSU Libraries Fellows will discuss how resources at the NCSU Libraries can assist researchers and others wanting to learn more about the legacy of women in STEM at NC State, from its earliest pioneers to today. Following a brief presentation, attendees are invited to enjoy refreshments and view data and archival materials about women in STEM on the iPearl Immersion Theater.

This program is co-presented by the NCSU Libraries in collaboration with WISE (Women in Science and Engineering).
