Archives and Data Visualization at the NCSU Libraries: Enhancing Research on Women in STEM

Two NCSU Libraries Fellows will discuss how resources at the NCSU Libraries can assist researchers and others wanting to learn more about the legacy of women in STEM at NC State, from its earliest pioneers to today. Following a brief presentation, attendees are invited to enjoy refreshments and view data and archival materials about women in STEM on the iPearl Immersion Theater.

This program is co-presented by the NCSU Libraries in collaboration with WISE (Women in Science and Engineering).

The Dynamic Sun: A Live View with Astrophysicist Henry “Trae” Winter and Engineer Peter Cheimets

The Dynamic Sun, which includes a near-real-time feed of the Sun featuring loops, sunspots and solar flares and other solar activity within an hour of their occurrences, takes “big data” and converts it into a breathtaking and fascinating display for the video walls in the James B. Hunt Jr. Library.  Free and open to the public.

The Physics of Football with Dr. Ainissa Ramirez

The Goodnight Scholars Program is thrilled to announce the “The Goodnight Scholars Program Presents: Ainissa Ramirez” scheduled for Monday, February 8, 2016 at 6:30 p.m. in the Talley Student Union Stewart Theatre. Doors open at 6:00 p.m. The event will be free and open to the public.

Dr. Ramirez, a science evangelist, co-author of “Newton’s Football,” and former associate professor at Yale University, will explore the science behind America’s Game in her presentation “The Physics of Football.” Combining her mastery of science with her love for the game, Dr. Ramirez will use empirical evidence and witty humor to address the complex evolution of modern football. Fans of the gridiron or scientific research will find Dr. Ramirez’s narrative compelling and wonderfully entertaining, resulting in a new appreciation of the relationship between science and athletics.
