Applications now being accepted for the Summer 2017 NC Zoo Animal Behavior and Welfare Research Assistant Positions.
The three positions are meant for juniors and seniors interested in studying animal behavior in the context of captive animal management and welfare.
Summer projects include:
 
– Captive elephant welfare
– Captive chimp welfare and enrichment
– Captive polar bear welfare

What do Career Ambassadors do?
• Present pre-scheduled weekly LAUNCH series workshops (covering advanced career topics including networking, LinkedIn, and job/ internship search strategies – dates/ times for spring tentatively on Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 6:30 pm, schedule for upcoming semester will be provided well in advance).
• Present basic career-related workshops (topics include of Career Development Center services, resumes, and interview skills) requested by residence halls, Greek life, and other student groups.
• Represent and assist the Career Development Center at campus events, open houses, and career fairs
• Promote Career Development Center programs such as Co-op , internships, and externships by sharing your experiences with other students.
• Serve as an informal resource to the Career Development Center, students, faculty and employers.
• Assist with resume critiques and mock interviews.

** You must be currently enrolled in undergraduate degree program. **

Qualifications
What are the expectations of the role?
• Attend Training Retreats prior to the start of Fall and Spring semesters (dates TBD).
• Complete on-line training modules (approximately 5-10 hours) prior to your first semester as an ambassador.
• Approximately 3-5 hours of volunteer service per week during fall and spring semesters, which includes:
– 2 LAUNCH Presentations a semester.
– 4 Workshops a semester – Signed up for at your discretion.
• Enroll in and attend 2 credit USC 298 course for Career Ambassadors held bi-weekly on Fridays from 2:30-4:00 pm on pre-determined dates/times (TBD – schedule for upcoming semester will be provided well in advance).
• Represent the Career Development Center in a professional manner at all events and presentations.QUALIFICATIONS
• Must be reliable, committed, and responsible with the ability to work well as a team member.
• Motivated to serve and help fellow NCSU students as role model and with excellent interpersonal skills.
• Excited and ready to learn about career preparation knowledge.
• 3.0 GPA
• Currently enrolled in undergraduate degree program.

February 25 deadline- Fall Semester (2016) Scholarship Opportunity (undergraduates) Duke University Marine Laboratory

The Duke University Marine Lab is pleased to offer scholarships for two non-Duke undergraduates covering tuition & fees, room & board, books, travel to Beaufort, and full support for participation in a Beaufort Signature travel course to Panama during a semester of study, Fall 2016 in Beaufort North Carolina. Undergraduate fellows will enroll in Duke courses taught in Beaufort, where there is emphasis on the biology and physiology of marine organisms, marine molecular biology, marine policy, and coastal socio-ecological issues. Announcement of awards will be made no later than 15 March 2016. Students on financial aid should consult with their financial aid advisor to determine how a scholarship would impact their financial aid package.

To be eligible, an applicant must

  • be enrolled as a sophomore, junior, or senior in college in Fall 2016
  • be a US citizen or hold a permanent resident visa

Other factors considered in the evaluation process include whether an applicant

  • identifies with a group that is racially/ethnically underrepresented in marine science
  • has demonstrated interest in marine science and its impact on society
  • anticipates pursuing a PhD in the marine sciences
  • submits a compelling personal statement and strong letters of recommendation

Summer Internship at Biogen

The Biogen Community Lab in Research Triangle Park (RTP) is seeking a summer intern. The intern’s main responsibility will be to assist with running the Community Lab summer sessions for high school students and professional development for teachers. During the summer, the intern will perform basic laboratory preparation and clean up, test hands on genetics and microbiology labs, assist with the organization of the summer sessions and the related paperwork, as well as provide teaching assistance. Applicants should have a strong background in the biological sciences including at least basic lab experience in genetics and microbiology.
