Preparing for NSO

We’re looking forward to meeting the inaugural class of LSFY students during New Student Orientation (NSO) in a few weeks! Our NSO sessions are scheduled for July 22 – 23, and July 23-24. Here are a few tips from the LSFY Advisors on how to prepare for Orientation.

  1. Review the New Student Checklist. Be sure you have set up your Unity Account.
  2. Make sure you are checking your NC State email on a regular basis. Important information from your advisors and professors is already being sent to these accounts!
  3. Based on your current AP/IB and other transfer credits, complete fall enrollment no later than 5:00 p.m. on Friday, July 11th.  All LSFY students will be lock out of the enrollment system 7/11 – 7/24, allowing the LSFY Advisors time to review fall schedules prior to NSO.
  4. If you need additional help with fall enrollment you will have an opportunity to meet with an advisor during NSO. Non-urgent questions (vet/med school requirements, undergraduate research, etc.) will not be addressed during NSO advising, and are more appropriate to discuss during advising meetings in the fall.
  5. The LSFY Advisors, and several faculty who teach in the life sciences, will be around during NSO. Look for opportunities to meet these people and get to know more about their research, interests, and backgrounds.
  6. Come prepared to fully participate in NSO. Our program will be different than other Orientation sessions – so if you have friends who have already completed NSO for a different program at NC State, don’t expect our session to repeat theirs! Since you have already completed fall enrollment, we are using our NSO session to preview Critical and Creative Thinking in the Life Sciences (LSC 101) and to briefly introduce you to the various disciplines that make up the Life Sciences First Year program. Be ready to get involved in LSFY!

Want to change your major?

If you’ve already decided a major in the life sciences (Biochemistry, Biological Sciences, Genetics, Microbiology, Plant Biology, Nutrition Science, Zoology) is not for you, you can contact the Admissions office prior to June 1 to request a change of major. After this date, you will be part of the LSFY program at least through the end of the fall semester. Don’t worry though, even if you change your mind after June 1, our advisors will work with you to help you navigate the interdepartmental transfer system.
